Hide and Seek

This morning, Lia had to leave a little early for a dentist appointment, so she missed an impromptu game of hide and seek with Colin. When it was time to leave, I asked Colin if he was ready to go to school. He shook his head no, ran into the TV room, jumped on his chair, and pulled a blanket over himself.

Fortunately, Dad has extensive experience in the game of hide and seek, and was able to best our child in this particular contest.

I can forsee many morning battles about going to school in our future!

easter 2011

We spent this Easter weekend in the Quad Cities and had a great weekend! I can't believe how much he has changed since his last easter!

Colin even got to hunt for eggs this year!

I was surprised he was as into it as he was. He seemed to like carrying the eggs around and taking them in and out (and in and out) of his basket.

It was a little chilly, but a great day to be outside!

On Sunday, we went to the Thompson family easter dinner, where Colin had lots of fun running around (the family owns the restaurant, so we had the place to ourselves).

He also dressed up like a gentleman for dinner Saturday night with the Viscioni family.

and had fun pillaging his easter baskets. He loved these shades he got from Aunt Shelly!

haven't had time to take any new pictures this week. But I told my dad I'd provide the b-roll of shots that led up to getting the April 15 picture. It was no easy task.

did I mention he likes cars (kahs!)?

So in Colin's expansive vocabulary of oh, ten words, one of his favorites is "car." Which, as I've mentioned, comes out like either a drunken Bostonian or sometimes a little gutteral german: "Kah!" But either way, he enjoys yelling Kah! whenever he sees anything resembling a car. You may also not be aware that I have been mulling over a replacement for my car for, oh, ten years now, unable to decide what I want. Mike stopped by the honda dealership the other day and oh so helpfully picked up brochures for my two frontrunners: the CRV and the accord. Guess what Colin's favorite new books are? He runs and gets the Kah! books and then backs in to our laps, settling down for what's sure to be a fascinating story line of horsepower and available all-wheel steering. All the while, helpfully pointing to each picture and yelling, you guessed it, Kah!

When in doubt, just hide under it. Life lesson there, folks.

So far he appears to favor the Accord brochure over the CRV. I'm thinking about just laying them on the table and letting the kid pick.

another day, another park. (& an attempted grand theft auto)

This morning we set off to Happy Hollow to get a workout by pushing Colin's stroller on the (very hilly) trail. We spent so long on the trail that when we got back to the car, he was zonked out. Afraid that taking him home and out of the car would result in him refusing to go back to sleep, we decided it was a beautiful day for a drive. So we drove about 20 minutes north to Delphi which just so happens to have the only Blimpie anywhere near West Lafayette. After stopping for subs, the three of us ate in the park in Delphi, which is a place we discovered a couple of years ago and happen to think makes a great place for a picnic. After lunch, we went for a walk, including on the horrible swaying suspension bridge over the river that I hate. Of course, Colin and Mike loved it. This thing is so creaky I found myself thinking about the rules for suing a municipality for personal injuries incurred in a public park.

Colin loved watching the river rushing by below. This is right before he tried to climb the chain link fence.

So then we headed over to the playground and Colin of course ran straight to the shiny blue mini car sitting next to the slides, all the while yelling kah! kah! That's a really nice little toddler toy for a playround! I thought. Foreshadowing!

Colin loved the car! His face just lit up as he turned the steering wheel and climbed around in it. I grabbed Mike's cell and snapped pictures!

A few minutes later, a mom and two kids came over and sort-of-politely informed me that that was, in fact, the little girl's car. Parked unattended. On a playground. (See those teensy tiny people in the background at the top of the next picture? No? Those are the car's "owners." Pretty far away for people who care about their property, right?).

So, yes, in this picture you can totally see the tire tracks that might indicate that this is not a permanent mounted toy. You all know I'm blind.

Needless to say, Colin was not happy to hear that he'd crawled into a bait car. He literally gave the little boy who climbed in with him the strong-arm and tried to push him back out of the door. We had to remove him, screaming, and drag him back to our car. Parenting!

first family trip to the neighborhood playground today. I'd say we had fun.

lunch date

Pouring down rain this morning, so in desperation, we reluctantly reached the epitome of the suburban Indiana family and headed to Chik-fil-A for indoor playground and lunch. This kid destroyed some carrot and raisin salad. He'd fit right in down in Charlotte. (CLT is where I got hooked on CFA lemonade. It's one of the three things I can eat there unless its breakfast).

This was right before an old lady stopped in her tracks and said, "Aren't you handsome!" The ladies, they love Colin.

I also made the mistake of letting him try my lemonade. I never got it back.

He looked up at dad after each sip and said "MMMM!"

Historical side note: the last time we were in this restaurant, we sat in the same booth and had breakfast and called everyone to tell them we had just found out we were having a baby boy. The time, it flies.

friday!

I got out of a meeting early this afternoon and was able to pick up Colin early. We got to come home and have some play time before dinner. Given the week I've just had, it was literally the highlight of the week. Having spent all week writing (and rewriting and rewriting) an appellate brief, I have no words left. So here's some pictures of playtime. The only kind of broccoli I'll eat - plastic.

visitors!

This weekend we were lucky enough to get two visitors who went out of their way on their drives home to stop and see us. Saturday morning Aunt Zoe stopped here on her way home from Chicago. She was having so much fun she decided to spend the night. It was so much fun to have her here! Then on Sunday morning, Zoe was literally walking out to her car when Grandpa Doug pulled up to the house on his way home from Virginia. Colin and Grandpa were fast friends and entertained each other all morning!

The weather was nice, although super windy, so we were able to go to the park with Aunt Zoe and spend some time outside today too. We also squeezed in some play time with the neighbors and Mike, Zoe and I were able to have some drinks and watch the Final Four - an all around great weekend!
